Computer and Network Technology has been the "change agent" for our industry since 1990. I suppose an argument could be made that technological advances were "change agents" in the 1960's, '70's and '80's as well. We have a well documented history at the office and I can tell you that the changes were not as rapid and radical back then. Today's technology can be a wonderful thing, but only if you utilize it to it's maximum potential. Over a two year period we cleaned out 119 four drawer file cabinets and disposed of them! I'm really pleased with our electronic document management system. We transitioned from paper files to electronic files over several years altogether. In fact, we have a hybrid system today, because we still maintain some paper files.
Off The Shelf Software Programs are in abundance today. At one time businesses were dependent on in-house programs created specifically for a unique function. Canned software packages are readily available on the market today to fill almost any need. The great thing about packaged software is that in most cases the vendor goes the extra mile to make a really good product before taking it to market, whereas in the old days if you were paying a staff technician to create a program you usually ended up with a bare bones version.
Changes In Computer Hardware are changing the way we do things as well. A good example is tape backups of information being replaced with backups to hard drives. The old tape backups could be time consuming and just a royal pain. We went to a dual monitor setup several years ago and even though they are making bigger and bigger monitors and the prices are coming down somewhat on them, I still prefer the dual setup. I was amazed at the time savings we
achieved with dual monitors. It far exceeded our expectations and was well worth the investment, many times over.
